1986 Yamaha FJ1200: A Sport-Touring Powerhouse
“Introduced in 1986 as the successor to the FJ1100, the Yamaha FJ1200 quickly earned a reputation as a sport-touring legend. Powered by a robust 1,188cc air/oil-cooled inline four-cylinder engine, the FJ1200 delivered approximately 130 horsepower at 9,000 rpm and 81 lb-ft of torque at 7,000 rpm. Its DOHC, 16-valve configuration and smooth five-speed transmission offered an ideal balance of brute force and highway civility.
The bike’s steel tubular frame provided stability at speed, while the 41mm front telescopic forks and rear mono-shock with adjustable preload gave riders responsive yet comfortable handling. Weighing in at around 570 pounds (wet), the FJ1200 was no featherweight, but its power-to-weight ratio and aerodynamic full fairing made it a formidable performer on open roads.
Dual front disc brakes (298mm) and a single rear disc ensured confident stopping power. The FJ’s comfortable upright seating, 5.8-gallon fuel tank, and optional hard luggage made it a favorite for long-distance riders seeking both speed and practicality. As one of the first motorcycles to successfully bridge the gap between sport and touring categories, the 1986 Yamaha FJ1200 remains a highly regarded classic among collectors and enthusiasts alike.”

This 1986 Yamaha FJ1200 has just 4,523 miles and remains in very good, original condition. It retains its factory paint and graphics, complemented by a custom red-and-white flame Corbin seat. All components, including the exhaust and controls, are original. Garage-kept and off the road for two years, it shows minor corrosion on some aluminum surfaces, as seen in photos. A well-preserved example of Yamaha’s iconic sport-tourer, low-mileage examples like this are increasingly rare. A true 1980s survivor for collectors and riders alike.
